Introduction

While nobody would say that all men are monolithic in the way that they act and the preferences that they have about their own personal fitness levels, there can be no denying the fact that in general there are going to be some exercises that men are more suited to doing because of the way in which they view their abs and what their priorities are when exercising. If you’re looking for a way to jump-start your abdominal workout routines, take a look at some of these exercises.

Curls for the determined individual

If you take an honest look at yourself and your strengths and weaknesses when it comes to exercising, you’ll have a better idea about the exercises that would work for you. For someone that is truly determined to make things happen and is essentially willing to do whatever it takes, there is nothing wrong with the simple abdominal curl. Also known as a crunch, this exercise starts with you on your back and then sees you bring your front side up to an angle of about 30 to 45 degrees. It is a lot smaller in terms of movement than sit-ups, but will give you the same benefits without the added risk to your back.

Equipment for the younger generation

Younger people wanting to get in shape tend to look towards technological advances to help them achieve their goals. There is nothing wrong with this, but you have to know which technology works and which technology is really not worth your time. A good example of a simple bit of technology that can help you accomplish a lot is the exercise ball. The exercise ball can be applied to the traditional crunch from the previous section. If you buy a ball and balance your back on the ball before doing modified crunches from that position, your abs will end up doing more work than they would were you lying flat on the ground. This is a great example of how introducing equipment into your workouts can end up helping a great deal.

Modified crunches for greater power

The recurring theme throughout this article is the theme of the crunch. For shaping and toning your abs, there are few motions out there that can beat the basic crunch motion. If you’ve graduated however and feel the need for something more powerful, try a modified crunch. If you don’t have an exercise ball, you can achieve much of the same increase in power by lying on your back and extending your legs into the air with feet crosses and knees just slightly bent. This will put more of the focus into the stabilizing gyro of your core and by virtue of doing so work your ab muscles even better.

Torso track exercises for experts

The torso track sees you gripping the handles of an exercise apparatus and gliding forward and backward with the pressure of movement on your core. This is a great advanced workout for people that have managed to sail through the crunches and modified crunches discussed above, but make sure that you actually are at an advanced level before you try it out. Not everyone can do this motion and even fewer people can do it without risking injury.

Don’t injure yourself

It may seem like a rather obvious piece of advice to be giving, but you really do need to make sure that you don’t injure yourself when you are going through the ab workouts that you have chosen to pursue. Flexibility exercises before and after exercising along with proper warm up and cool down exercises are essential because they will greatly reduce the risk of injury.

Working your back out as part of the abdominal workout is not a bad idea as well. If you have five different ab exercises in your workout as an example, try to add a sixth one for your back in there somewhere as well. Your back takes most of the strain in ab workouts, so make sure you give it some tender loving care throughout. If you follow all of these ideas, any of the ab workouts men just love mentioned here or anywhere else should do wonders for you if you can stick to it.
